2014 Goals!

Jan 1, 2014

Happy 2014, everyone! Is it just me or does it literally feel like we are presently in the future? I enjoyed the year's transition with my loved ones and a little after midnight everyone was Face-timing loved one's instead of texting, or calling, which was pretty amazing. Regardless of how far we are from each other, we have easy access to seeing each others faces and what we are doing live. I am so thankful for technology and advancement. It can be just as much as a distraction as it can be a blessing! I am grateful for growing up in a period where communication is instant. This means a lot to me particularly because my parents and I are separated by sea. Seeing their faces and their moves through an electronic device eases things for me.
I have been anticipating this new beginning for several weeks now. I don't know what it was about this time. I never believed in setting New Year's Resolutions, but throughout the year I have always been a goal-setter. I guess they are pretty close, right? I decided to go for it, whether I keep up with it or not, I have decided to give a few things a try. I read somewhere it took 40 days to build a habit... so if I stick to these things for a little over a month maybe they will come easy :)! I am rather excited for them and encourage you to list some things that maybe you can try differently, or completely new. I've came up with 5 main things I would like to focus on.
  • Q&A a day 5 YEAR JOURNAL
Not only am I challenging myself to write something down each day here, but to continually do it for the next 5 years! Wow. That might sound overwhelming, but what attracted me to this journal was actually its simplicity. Every day there is a simple question such as, "What can you smell right now?" or "What do you want to buy?" or "What details from today would you like to remember? or "Who do you feel the closest to?" ...etc. The answers are meant to be very brief. 1 or 2 sentences will do. So, 365 questions and 1,825 answers at the end of the 5 years. The journal looks like a small book that can be kept at a coffee table, night table, desk, wherever. It does not take up much space at all, and its very cute (in my opinion)!
This goal will involve a more spiritual side of me. I want my prayers and my time with God to be much more intentional. I'd like to do a detailed post on this particular one because there's much more detail to it then what I could write right now since this current post is to briefly share what I have came up with. I felt 2013 was a year where I saw God's hand upon my life over and over and over again. I have never felt such a need to be thankful and prayerful as I do in this age. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests before God, which transcends all understanding, and will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." Philippeans 4:6,7
I found this idea on one of my favorite sites! Pinterest! (Follow me! [albanery maria] Link on top right of page.) I will keep a mason jar and throughout times write good moments on a sticky note and stuff them all in there. At the end of the year I will open this jar and read all of the great things God has permitted in my life. Miracles, lessons, good times, etc.
  • Alba's Universe (Blog & YouTube)
One of the highlights of 2013 was most definitely starting my blog. I had been wanting to for so long and could not be more proud of myself for initiating this process. This year, I am investing in a new MacBook Pro and a Canon camera to improve the quality of my photos and videos. I also want to post more often. I have dedicated a section in my Filofax, as I have shown before, to scribble ideas and be more creative with what I post. I am so incredibly thankful for the love and support I have received since day one! I am loving looking back at my thoughts, my looks, my videos, who I was, who I am, etc. I like that this is all documented on something that will never get lost or die for as long as I am alive: the internet.

I am currently reading a book on financing that my pastor, Javier Maldonado, blessed me with. New York Times Bestseller Dave Ramsey: The Total Money Makeover ~ A Proven Plan For Financial Fitness. At this age, it is so easy and almost seems relevant to blow money when we are comfortable with a decent paying job. I am really thankful I have opened my eyes young, and have realized money does not come as easy as it goes. It is imperative that I learn how to budget and discipline myself when it comes to spending. This year, I am turning 22. I know- very young, but this is the time to watch closely and wisely what I do with what I have and how I plan. I want to start seeking my first apartment soon, and that takes a load of responsibility. I want to be well-educated in this area, and thus have less things take me by surprise. I know some things I will learn by experience, but I know I will be better than not, if I proceed into adulthood cautiously and aware.

I might come up with more- who knows! An overall mental reminder I would like to have this year is to be more in the present. Too often I stress the past, and worry about the future. Two factors that do not edify or improve anything. I want to simplify my life in such a way that waking up is but a joy. That is why I am so invested in planning. I want clarity and peace. As much as I plan, I know that God's will for me will prevail. I am just working on doing what I can to make this very moment simpler, and more enjoyable. Here's to 2014!

May God bless you with a prosperous year! xx, Alba
